Aa illustrating tbo great valuĆ© placed on a little whisky by sotoe folka in rural Maine, where "prohibiciĆ³n prohibits, " this story is told: "A big red faced fellow, who was sufi'ering frora a long spell of enfqrced abstinence as well as from an injured toe, was brought into the office of a well known physioian of central Maine to have the toe amputated. The sufferor objeoted to the use of ether or chloroform, butwhen the doctor turned out a tumbler of whisky for him to drink he lio longer opposed the proceodings, aud the toe was cui off without trouble. Reviving nitor the oporation, he looked at the foot meditatively for a moment, and then cockod his oye shrewdly at the doctor.
