The Duke of Wellington nndertook the uupleasant task of communicating Lord Livra-pool's dotermination. As soou as the king knew wbat was wanted of him ho broke out: "Arthur, it is impossible. I said, ou my honor as a gentleman, ho should never be one of my ministers agaiu. I ara snre you will agree with uio that 1 cannot do what. I 'eakl ou my honor as a. gentleman I wonld not do. " Auother muu would have been silenced, but the great soldier, always eqnal to an einergency, replied: "Pardon me, sir, but I doii't agree with yon at all. Your majesty is not a gentleman. This was when he üung a glass oí wino in Colonel Hamlyu's face, with "Hamlyn, yon are a blaokguard!" The insulted oíncor could not return the compliment without committing Bomething likö treason - it was out of the question to challenge the priuoe, while to let tbe insult pass unnoticed was equally impossible. Tho colonel lilled his glass and tlirew the contents in tho face oí' his neighbor, saying, "His majesty's toast, pass it on!" "Hamlyn," oried t!ie regent, "you're a capital fellowl Here's your health. " And tbey were fast friends from that
