Chicago, March 28.- Dyer Scanlau, one of the most desperate crimináis who ever oierated in Chicago, has boen just released from Jollet aftor serving ten years and ten months, lcss the timo deducted for good behavior. The crime for which this sentence was imposed was comniitted May 10, 1888. Immediately prior to it a largo number oí burglanes had boen comniitted on the south side, and Scanlau wiis aocused of beiug conneeted with them all. On the night of the day mentioned Offlcer Martin Nolan was passing a house on Twenty-second strcet, near Purple, when ho heard shots and iound Scanlan anl a man named O'Neill quarreling. Sjaulon had been shot In the lrg, but on the officer presenting himself both mon turnud on him and Scanlan shot him, and for a timo it was supposert that hehadfataüy wounded him. The ofïicer ultimately recovered. I n litiod Himseit in a Home. Next day Inspector of Pólice John Bonfiekl, accompanled by Detectives Ben Williams, William ïhorpe, and John Hanley and a sqiuid of patroliuen, surrounded a house on Twenty-second street, near WentworUi avenue, where Scanlau was in hiding. When the pólice reached the house they founil it barricaded, and when they showed themselves Scanlan oponed a fuslBade and kept it up for half a day. In the room in which he had shut himseif Mollie Mott loaded up the revolvers ns last hs he flred them off. It was only aftcr his ammunition was spent that he was captured. She took a deep interest in his trial and beforo his removal to Joliet promised that on the day of his release she would beuome his wifc. From that time till a few months ago she had appeared to be truc to hor vow, bat about, eight weeks ago sho was secretly married to Frank Mead, who at one time was Scanlan'a lieutenant, and sinee his arrest is credited with being the leader of his gang.
