Late at night the detectives had about decided that Durant had murdered Miss Williams, and this theory was further strengihened yesterday morning when, after inaking ;i thorough search of the Eraanuel church the dead and outraged üody of Miss Lamont was found concealed in the steeple. Doath had been caused by strangulation. The body was lying just inside the door of the lower room, nude and on the lloor. Around the neck were blue streaks, the marks of fingers thut had been pressed deep into the tender üesh. The body was taken to the morgue, where it was placed on a slab by the side of Miss Williams. The chief of pólice sent tor Rev. Dr. Gibson, pastor of the church, and the report becanie current that ho had been accused of the crimes, and had been arrested. Tlien the crowds surged to Dr. Gibson's house and the excitement grew more intense. The minors of the arrest were later denied and it became known that Dr. Gibson and the sexton of the church and been merely caüed to teil what they ínew. iiater carne the news that Durant :iad been arrested at Walnut Creek, on the road to Mount Diablo. He was caught by Detective Anthony. The detective and his prisoner left on the next train for San Francisco, where the7 arrived last evening. The pólice are tertaln they have the right man. They elaim to have two witnesses whosaw Durant and Miss Williams in company last Friday night and also state that when a gearch was made of Durant's house, in the pocket of his coat was found a purse which Miss Williams is known to have carried Friday night. Durant is about 2H years of age and was born and reared in tho neighborhood in which the murders occurred. He is a gradúate of the Coggswell high school, and has been studying medicine for a year. He is a niember of the second brigade signa! corps and was assistant superintendent of Emanuel church Sunday school. He was always of a quiet dis"position, and has frieuds who refuse to believe, in spite of the evidence, that he oommitted the crime attributed to hini. ïhe pólice, however, think Durant is another Jack-the-Ripper, with a mania for murder. They state that it is highly probable that Durant is responsible for the killing of Eugene Ware, a young drug clerk who was found stabbed to death several months ago in the store where he worked. Durant's parents are highly esteemed people of the district in which thoy live.
