Fire In A State Capitol
Springfikld, April 16. - Fire broke out Saturday in the aeuate wing of the stav house, and fanned by a floree Rale raged for ov?r an hour and caused a damage of 125,000 - possibly moro. During the flre the greatest excitement prevailed among the lnmates of the state house, and owing to the high wind and the dilïiculty óf gettiug at the üre, which was under the roof, it was for a time feareel that the whole of the magnificent capitol would be ruined. The flro was discovered by the janitor in the senate charnber. The flremen and empluyes of the stato then spent half an hour in vain search for the flames. They were flnally located under the roof along the western sido of the sonate wing, whero tinnera had been engaged repairing tho roof. A general alarm was turned in, but by the time the department arrived the flro had gained much headway under the metal ooveríng of the roof. The flreruen had great difficulty in getting Unes of hose to tho roof. The smoke was overpowering, and they had to chop holes through the roof, and nieanwhile tho flre had crept along from the senata wing to the ba3e of the domo. Here, fortunately, was a brick wal 1 completely ehutting off the rest of the building. The 6trong wind, however, caused the flro to burn fiercely and dense volumes of smoke penetrated all quarters of the state house. By 1:90 p. m., as a result of hard workon tho purt of the flremen, the flames were under control and soon af ter tho flre was out. During tho progress of the fire the officials of all the departments made haste to get all tho valuable documente, trophies, etc, in their ónices into the flreprooï vaults whore they would be safe from destruction. Quantities of water poured through the roof leaked through the senate ceiling, oausing much damage. The smoke penetrated all parts of the west wing, and has probably caused much damage. Both libraries, however, 69caped. There is no insurance. A large force of men was at once set to work to repair the damage.
