The social grosbeuks of South África liveiu large societies. They select a tree of considerable size, and literally cover it with grass roof, under which their cornmon dwolling is oonstmcted. The roof serves the doublé purgóse of keeping off the heat and tho rain, and 400 or 500 pairs of birds aroknown to have the same shelter. The nests in this aerial d-welling are built in regular streeta and closoly resembJe rows of tenerueut bonses.
