Bowie's Great Knife
The bowio knife obtains its name from Rezin P. Bowie, wbo livod in Maryland in tbs early part of this century. He bad a brother wbo had rnany enemies, and he, being turbulent aud fond of hand to hand fights, stood iu need of good weapons. Rezin undertook to furnish him with a weapou somewhat superior to any that con Id be found in those parts at tbat period. A knife was made out of a blacksiaith'sÃile, and a .blade was had nine inches long, to which was fastened a handle of, six iucbes. The knife was simple, strong in build and had an admirable temper. Bowie used itin 19 sanguinary contesta, and then, happening in Pbiladelphia, he met with a cntler who fashioned il over tor hirn. Bowie afterward settled on tho Mississippi, and entertained the celebrared actor Edwin Forrest, to whoni he gave the original knife. Forrest placed tho knifo in bis collectiou, whero he rotained it uutil his death. -
