Galena, Hls., April á9. - Galena paid dne hotnage to the memory of her great soldier-oifcizen, Grant. The city was in gala attire, ílags boated froni all the public buildings, and every private houso and business block was deckod in flaga and bunting. The exercises oí the day begon when a special train arrived from Chicago bearing Hon. H. D. Estabrook, of Omaha, orator of the day; H. H. Kohlsaat, Thomas Nast, Melville E. Stone and others. A parade was formed at the Illinois Central station and moved to Turner hall. At Turner hall, J. B. Brown, president of the day, introducod the proceeding8 with a short speech; Rev. Georgo D. Lindsay, the chaplain, offered prayer; Judge C. C. Kohlsaat, of Chicago, made a short address, presenting to the city of Galena, in behalf of H. H. Kohlsaat, the painting, "Peace in Union," by Thomas Nast.depicting the scène of Lee's surrender; Mayor Bermingham responded for the city, and Estabrook dclivored his oration, which was au eloquent effort. Chicago, April 29 -The birthday1 ot General Grant was observed here more generally than ever before. The presence oí Mrs. Grant and .Mrs. Sartorio added interest to tho exercises, hold in the Auditorium undcr the auspices of the Chicago Press club. Orations on Grant were delivered by Luther Laflin Mills, of Chicago, and General O O. Howard, and military exercises and martini songs oompleted the programme, which was carried out in the presonce of 4,000 people. The Marquette club celebrated bya. banquel at which Bout.elle of Maine and Warner of Missouri spoke. Mrs. Grant was tendered a receptiun and hundreds of soldiers called oii her. The anniversary was more generally observed than ever before. At Pitts burg the Americus club gave ad inner. The speakers were Ailisou and Kepburn of lowa, Grosvenor of Ohio and others. At Philadelpnia, Representa tive Wise, of Virginia, was the orator and ex-Senatoi Higiiins, of Delaware, hada twist of the Uon's tail over the Nicaragua busines. At Boston, General Horace Porter was the principal speaker. There were similai celebrations at a numter of cities.
