Spkikqfield, Hls., M;iy '.- Night express No. a on the Chicago and Alton, northbound, was attacked about 13 o'clock last night about two miles this sido of Carlinvillo by throo masked men, who had olimbed up on the platform of the blind baggage, suppoaedly at Carlinvllle. ïhese men olimbed over tue tender, ordered Engineer Krank Holmes to l stop iho train, and immediately began flring. Holmes was killed at theflrstüre. Fireman Frank ïuggle escaped. ïhe assailants, after shooting the enginter, jumped off the train and made their escape. Fireman Tuggle then ran the train baok to Carllnvlile. It is not known whether robbery whs lnteiided or not. Engiueer Holmes, when golng south at Garlinville, compelled some tramps to get off the train, and also ran some tramps off that woio burning cara o the "Y," and It wasthought that some of these mea were hl murderen. Holmes' home is in Bloomington. Later. - All three tbugs have been caught and jailed at Carlinville. The one who shot Holmos was captured by a mail clerk as he was getting off the cab.
