V a:-H ixgtc .1 i'.ne 6 - The pension case ofjmige Char.t-, D. Long, of Michigan, which has btcii belore the local courts in ne form or another for some tiiue, has been flnally determined by the court of appeals, the commissioner of pensions coming out victorious, though the probabili:ies are that the case will now be taken to the supreme court of the United States. About a year ago Commissioner of Pensions Jjochren caused the pension of Juage Long to be reducod from $75 to $50 per month. Subsequently the oase came before Judge Bradley, of the District supreiue court, and he decided in effect that the cominiBsioner of pensions had no authority to reduce the pension. The court of appeals reversod that decisiĆ³n, holding that a pension is not a vested i ight except in a very limited sense, as shown by Cue act of Dec 21, 18y3; that the courts caunot interfere in matters of this kind, and thac the commissioner of pensions had a perfect right to review the acts ol' his predecessors.
