Last Night's Council Meeting
The adjoumed rneeting of the council last evening might have appeared dull to the uninitiated.but there was consid3rab)e ginger below the surf ace. Aid. Butterfield was elected president of the 30UH0Ü pro tem. A comnvunication of Pres. A. M. Clark of the board of public works wtua read, recormneuding that 3x101(5 hemlock plank be laid temporarily on the Beakes street bridge pending negotiafcions for its repair. This was passed unanimously. The city treasurer reported $593.28 due on the first payment of lateral sewer No. 1 and $1,253 on lateral sewer No. 2, which were ordered spread upon the rolls. The bond of the State Savings bank was accepted, the name of James L. Babcoek being added to the bond since its last presentation. The entire questiou of deferring the repairs of the Beakes street bridge was gone into. Aid. Koch could not uuderstand the see-sav$ng that was done. Aid. Coon saw it in the same light. Both were opposed to legal expenses ontside of the city attorney. Aid. Butterfield understood that the city attorney's salary did not cover active litigation and other attorneys were engaged. A motiou by Aid. Taylor that the city engineer give a grade on Beakes aud Broadway streets from the jnnotion with Detroit street to Wall street was laid on the table for one week after au aniraated diseussion. .
