Washington, July 18 - Secretary Lamont aaid that he did uot talk politics and did not soe any politieians during bis western tour. "I was not hunting ghosts," said no, "though I amtoldsoine were about. My trip was purely a business ono, and I had neither inclination nor opportunity to meddle in politics. About the only people I saw were tho military and railroad people." "You observed the condltion of the country through whlch you passed?" "Yes, enough to see that it appeared prosperous and proiniging. The railroad men whom I met told me that the outlook was vory favorable íor great pros' perity. They are about the only ones J had an opportunity to talK with on the ■ubjoct, and I presume that they ara about the best judges. Country Was Green and Blooming. "I oould see that the country was as green as our eastern lands, and the railroad people told me the crops were in an unusually good condición and gave promise oí the best results they hare had in that country for some time. It was iaid that the whole country was experiencing a renewal of prosperity and that the people were contented and satisfled with the outlook. All the orops are in the best possible condition and the reports from tbe various seotions of the oountry indícate a great product for the year. The railroads are all preparing for an immense amount of businoss. The president of one of the roadg told me that they were gutting ready to haul 75,000,000 bushels of wheac on nis road. All this, they said, indicated general pros perity and contentment atnong the western people."
