'1 had only 1,600 men with me, but I did not think it honorable to retreat, and I also thought that the numbers of the enemy were exaggerated, and cousequently proceeded on my march, and eventually met the enemy near Peralljos, about three leagues south of Bayamo. My column was commanded by the unfortúnate General Santocildes. When the latter was killed in action I took command. The battle was a hard fought one. The field was most unfavorable for the operationa of our troops. The enemy numbered three times more than we did, was well supplied with aminunltion, and fought skillfully. We were surrounded by fire on four sides, and there were two monients of danger. The firing lasted flve hours, and it was followed by another hour of fighting, in which our rear guard was engaged.
