Appleton, WIi., July 25.- General J. B. Doe, assistant secretary o( war, aocompanied by Major Marshall, of the United States engiueer deparement, and William Mann, of Oshkosk, assistant engineer In charge of the Fox river, arrived in the city and wlth a committee from Appleton went down the rlver, making a thorough examination of the condiiion of navigation and the watei power. Th silent milla and faetones and grass-grown rlver bed exoited surprise among the government party. After looking over the water power General Doe was escorted to the council rooms, where he met manufacturera and business men and listeneil to arguments and statistical statements rogardlng the 8ituation. The outcome of the conference cannot be forecast, but the situation spoaks for itself, and confldence is feit that General Doe cannot fall to realizo that soine relief Is an imperative necessity, and thttt he wiĆ¼ so modify the shutdown order as to provide such relief.
