A race with very small hands and feet is a race that has for generations done very little work and taken very little exercise. Sonth American ladies of Spanish blood can give points, as regards tiny extremities, to their Andalusian ancestresses, merely becanse an altogether tropical cli mate compela theindolence that a semitropical climate favors. When the average Frenchman - and M. Daudet is, in many respecta, a singnlarly average Frenchman - enlogizes the small foot, he is simply glorifying idleness. Not otherwise is the Chinaman prond of the cramped feet of his womankind, as at once a certificate of aristocratie idleness and a safegnard against dangerous excrusions.
