It is said of Sir John Millais, the artist, that, given a short brier wood pipe, a comfortable chair, and a pack of cards with whioh to play "patience," he is serenely satisfied with existence for the time being. Millais is oue of the rare prodigies who attaiued distinction in later lif e. He won a inedal for drawing when only 9, and at 11 he was a student of the Royal Academy of Arts. In the fullness of his fame he is a man of surprisingly simple tastes andhabits.
