Our republiean brethreu are haviug a hard time of it triug to explain the increase of nearly 90 per ceut iu ihe state taxes tliis year over last year and of 68 per cent iucrease over tho year before. Tbe great fact remains that the hard presed taxpayers of Michigan will have to go down in their pockets for over a ruillion more dollars iu state taxes than they ever did in any one year bef ore. The state faxes this year and nexc will be over f2,000,000 more thau they were under the two deraocratic years of Winans' admiuistration. As shown in onr last v;eeks' issue the republicaus not only are raising more tases bnt the amount of money on band Las also beea diminished by them. The tremendous iucrease iu state taxes does not suffice to keep our republicau state government iu spending ruoney. The dear people are footing the büls and the dear people voted that they wanted to foot thein by giving over $100,000 majority for Rich. It is a rich adniinistration and has all the habits of the born rich who not having e arned the money by the sweat of their own brows, do not realize the value of money. Despite the extravagant appropriations they neglected the educational institu. tioiis. The only reason that can be given for this is that the educa. tional iustitutions are happily not in politics and give no fat berths to our repnblican brethren wbo are woef ui ly hungry. Let those deinorcats who voted the republican tioket, and there were many of them a year ago( take their medicine this fall. They will know better what to do next year. A singed cat dreads the fire and our republican friends will have some diffionlty in inducing them to walk up to the fire again. Don M. Dickinsoü's public ntterances always express a strong Arnerican sentiment. They stir up the patriotic sentirnents in every American heart. Last week he spoke to the point concerniDg the tyranny of Spain exercised in Cnba, a tyranny grfiater than that for which our forefathers rebelled and ■wrested their freedom froin Great Britain. Spaiu eau say nothing if the United States recognizes the Cuban revolufcionists as belligerents. Withiu eight weeks after Fort Sumter was fired npon Spain had recognized the rebels in this country as belligeienls. It is almost time to give Spain a dose of her own medicine.espeeially as every liberty loving citizen must hope for the snccess of the Cuban cause. Ex-Governor Campbell is making a magnificent campaign in Ohio aud is earning the reputation of being the best living American campaigner. He is a brainy man, not afraid to express iris ideas and ideas take. The people want something more than mere words. If elected the victory will be so great as to almost make him thd logical democratie candidato for president. Mayor Pingree has a cinch on the city of Detroit. He has built up a powerfnl political machine in Detroit and is in position to dictate who may and who may not be nominated or elected in that city.
