Ex-congressman Arrested

AMSTERDAM, N. Y., Nov. 14.- Ëilward Wemple, ex-state senator, ex-congressman and ex-s;ate comptroller, was arrested at hls home iu Fultouville on the charge of attempting to set flre to tho residance of Htiburt H. Fonda, in Fultonville, on tho erening of Nov. 10. A basket, fillcd with shavings, eaturated with kerosene oil, was placed agairtst a rear door and set on fire. ïhe flre was discovered and extinguished in timeto save the building. Wemple is also eharged with having set flre to the Wemple foundry, which was burned n nionth agfo, and with causing other incendiary firos in Fultonville. Ho spent a fortune in politics and contracteü habita which led to his downfall. He took treatment for dipsomanía, but failed to derive benefit from it. His friends claim that his strange actions are tiua to his being inentally unbalanced.
