Though women are numerous iu the down town offices and behiud the counters and cash desks iu the shops, there are still some great businesses which have not been opened to them. Strangely enougb, the largest wholesale firms that trade iu wornan's .most familiar wears - dry goods - are still sticking stubbornly to ruasculine salesmen exolusively. In several of the very large dry goods jobbing honses there is but one woman employee, aud there is notbing new.or progressive about her presence iu these establishmeuts, for her place is one that has always been filled by a woman. This position is that of the trier on of saoks and wraps, usually in the fur departmeut. It is a peculiar thing for visitors to these great warehouses to discover one loue woman among the buudreds and hnndreds of mea aad to find her located high up stairs, and often in a corner, vvith men of the same.lepartment thick around her. In oüb of these great establishments it is said that the men realize the peculiarity of the trier on's position, and all unite ia treatiug her as gallantly and as considerately as if she were a feminine partner
