A down east lawyer had u tough case on hand at a recent term of conrt, and before it came ou laid his forefiuger tc his nose and evolved an idea. The presiding judge loved a gcod cigar, and the lawyer's happy thouglit was to propitiate bim and make hina frieudly to his case by treating him to the best the market afforded. The disciple of Blackstone was not in the habit of smoking good cigars hiruself, so when ho bonglit a 25 center to oiïer the court he bought a cheroot for his owu use. Arrucd with these, he sanutered into the judge's rooru, and af ter a littJe chat paPsed out a cigar, asking the jndge if he smoked. The court accepted gracefully, but before mitny wbiffs were drawn the horrified lawyer discovered he had giveu tho judge the cheroot and was puffing the Havana hiruself.
