It was the late Daguerreotypist HesIer of Chicago who inspü-ed Longfellow to write "Hia-watha. " Mr. Hesier was one oí the most eminent of his profeseion, and iu 1851 the London World's fair awarded hini the prize raedal for daguerreotypes. One of thern, a pioture of the falls of Minnehaha, carne into the poet 's possession and furnished immediate inspiration for the poem. In testimouy of his debt to Mr. Hesier Longfellow sent him a bound volume of his poems with his signature and compliments on the flyleaf.
