It is not generally known that Abraham Lincoln sent a substitute to the war agaiust thesouth, butsuch is a f act. During the earlier days of the war it seerns to have been the desire of all prominent meu in Washington tohave a representativo in the ranks, and Lincoln was no exceptou to the rule. At that time there was a minister named Staplws in Washington, one of whose sous, then aged 1 9, had a desire to go to the front. Lincoln heard of hirn, and after a conference selected him as bis representativa, and he proved worthy, for he wou honor on the field. He survived the war and fiually died in Stroudsburg, Pa. The inscription on the stone over his grave reads as follows : "J. tíuruinerfield Staples, a private of Compauy C, One Huudred and Seventysixth Regiment, P. V. ; alsoamember of the Secoud Reginjent, D. C. Vols., as a substitute for Abraham Lincoln." -
