In the several branches of the telpgraph service throúghont the oonntry there are a few operators who, by an ucusnal degree of expertness in the receiviiig and sending of messages, have ■won special dietinction among their coworkers, Vrat even in that limited coterie there are few indeed who have a record that can eqnal that of the subject of this sketch ; a record of which Mrs. Merryfield is not only justly prond herself, , but which the Western ünion corapany is pleased to hold up as an example of what may be accomplished by intelli' gent and persistent application to dnty. Mrs. Morryfield first entered tha felegraph service in a sraall offlce at Blairstown, Ia., in 1865. f or the old Illinois and Miesissippi Telegraph company. In 1868 ; uhe went to Chicago tu an operator, and j later as chief of the Isdies' department. j La 1S72 and 1873 s-he was an operator for the Atlantic and Paciflo and Union Pacific at Omaha, nnder Mr. Dickey. From 1874 to 1876 she was in San Franeisco and Los Angeles for the Western Union, and between 1878 and 1883 erved ia Colorado for the Western Union and Denyer and Rio Grande Rnilwrt company. In 1883 sbe went to Cheyenne and has remained there up to the present tims, occupyiug the position of nighfc ovire chief. In that office there are eight dúplex and two' qnad sete, besides the Wheatstone repeaters, half set, Morse repeaters, etc , all of which Mrs. Merryfield has in charge, giving the utmost satisfaction. During the recent Indian troubles in Wyomiug her expert work called forth remarks of snrprise frora newspaper operators in Chicago and New York by her good sending.
