Stenography played an important part at the ecumenical council of 1870. Pius 15, Deeding skillful stenographers, who shonld be discreet, asked a priest of Turin to select tberu among 24 serainarists of all nations. They were made to swear solenanly that they would not reveal a phrase of the deliberations. A few days bef ore the opening of the council, the pope summoned the 24 stenographers in order to be perfectly snre that they understood the Latin pronnnciatiori of various conntries.
