Mr. Uhl was bom in Ypsilanti, ib a gradúate of the University of Michigan and was at one time prosecnting attorney of Washtenaw oounty. Of reeent years he has been a prominent attorne.v of Grand Rápida. He has been assistant secretary of state since Oleveland's seoond term and his course has been marked by strong Americanism and by a thorongh nnderstanding of his duties. The Germán papers of this eotintry ípeak in high terrns of the appointmentj'whioh, as bis oíd friends and neighbors well kuow, be is ably qualfied to fill. Mayoi Pingree, of Detroit, is oonduoting another wagon oampaign for the repnblican gnbernatorial nomination and is throwing dnst in the eyes of O'Donnell, Wheeler, Bliss, Conant, and Feriy. It is Pingree against the field and Pingree has set out to howl londer than all the rest pnt together. It is a howling demagogical campaign. In the meantime the people are thinking about that three million state tas. And George L. Yaple may eroerage from his retirement to surprise them. Even the reputlioan politioians have not been able to esplain to the sat'sfaotion of their followers the high state tax, whioh is a million dollars more than ever before. General Harrison has withdrawn from the presidential race and the repnblioan field is now left to MoKinley, Reed, Allison, Morton, Davis and the rest.
