Washington's Brthday was duiy observed by the Laws of the University. They seonred the serrioes of Ben Butterworth, noted for having been one of the lawyers defeuding Congressman Breckenridge in the snit bronght agaiust him by Madeleine Pollard. Butterworth had to be paid $250 for coming, it ie claimed, and then didn't have his speech well memorized. However, he was enough of an orator to break away from his manuscript and depend upon his fund of good sense ana oratorical experience to pull him throngh. He was somewhat ecoentrio and kept well exercised, but the boys enjoyed him jast the same, and c'ieered him and langhed with him heartily. Mr. Butterworth said the people were to blame for our laws and their adniinistration. Upon the law sfrndents, the speaker thonght more than upon anyone else, depende the charaoter of our laws and their administration in the future. He thought that the dangers confronting us were not lack of patriotism or love of oountry, no laclrof ennobiing maxims. There muit be an applioation of tbem, however, and not their idle expression. The speaker thought that theie were dangers in emigration and the haste of everybody to get into the oities. He deplored the prevalenoe of partisan ambition under the guise of love oí country. Mr. Butterworth was a gnest of the Delta Cbi fraternity while here.
