Wagner, writing in 1846, said oí Schumann : "He is a highly gifted arasician, but au imposeible man. When I came frorn Paris, I went to see hiin. I ,told hiru of my Parisian experiences, spoke of the state of music in Frauce, then of that in Germany, spoke of literatura and politics, but he remained as good as durnb for nearly an hour. One caunot go on, talkiug qjiite alone. An impossiblo man!" Sohuxuánn gave an account of tb ia interview which practically agrees with that of Wagner. "I have seldoin met Wagner," he said, "but he is a man of education and spirit. Hetalks, however, nnceasingly, and that one cannot endure for long together. "
