Slavery survived in England ruuch later thaĆ¼ is genorally supposed. The word "boudage" in Northumberland still means a female farm servaut. The cooliesand salters - i. e., saltminers - of East Lothiau were actually slaves till 1775. If they deserted tlieir service, any one harboring them was liablo a penalty of L5 if he did not restore them in 24 hours. The last slave in England was not freed uiitil 1799, and in 1842 there was a cooly living vtho, as well as his father and grandfather, had worked as a slave in a pit at Musselburg.
