A Meaningless Platform
"An honest dollar, whether of gold, silvar or paper:" tbat is the plank on which the Washtenaw Republicans placed themselves on Monday. It sounds well, bnt as to maintain an 'honest dollar" either of silver or pa)er, it must be convertible into a gold dollar at the pleasure of the holder, it costs the United States treasnry - the United States taxpayers - a good round snm yearly to maintain the reputation for honesty of a fifty cent silver dollar. There is no such thing practicable as a donble standard or bimetallism. Why not be honest and declare in favor of a gold standard or a silver standard? We must oome to one or the other soonei or later.
