Sprixgfield, Hls., May 14.- In answer to an inquiry from a New York paper Tnesday night Governor Altgeld discussed the probability of a bolt on the part of the gold people in the Chicago convention in oase the free silver poople had a majority. The query nsked was as follows: "There seems to be expectations that the oonvention at Chicago may adopt a iree silvor plank. If the free silver men ■hould obtain control would that, in your opinión, lead to a bolt by the hard money men of the east and middle states? In that event what would the delegates of your state dof Can the Democratie convention accept a com, promise plank?" The'govercor answered: "I do not know what the gold Democrats would do if the convention adopted a silver plat..jforni and it does not matter much, because the Democracy has already been beaten in very eastern state on a gold platform. I flo not believe that any compromise is possible. because thus far every compromiso and every straddle has been treated ae a complete surrender to the eastern bosses and eastern interests, and the people are tired of it. They insist that this time the tail ought to make a little conceasion to the doj? . "The men who have manipulated thu Democratie party in the past and have proflted by it are determined to rule. They practically own a majority of the national oommittee and hope through it to control the orgaiiizatiou and seat sp ui'ious delegates to run the convention, and for this pnrpose they are getting up contests in nearly all the states in which they are beaten by the peoplc. I do not know what the result will be."
