& B. Green of Ottumwa, Ia. , tells a good story about Judge Hendershott of that oity, oue of the leading lawyers of the Hawkeye State. "Judge Hendershott," said Mr. Green, "was trying a case under the prohibition law. An important questiou was raised as to whether or not a barrel of whisky was. delivered to the defendant. "An Irishman of the name of O'Connor was the drayman, and when Judge Hendershott started to cross examine him he coucluded to frighteu him into contradictiug his testiruony on the esamination in chief. Assuming a dramatic pose and with a stern voico, he aid : 'Remember, sir, ycu are on your oath. Remember you have sworn to teil the trnth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Reinember that to deviate one iota from the truth is perjury, and the pnnishment for perjury is iruprisonment iu the state peniteutiary of Iow-a. Now, sir, upon your oath, did you deliver that barrel of whisky to Pat Duffy?' "The Irishraan auswered coolly and deliberately, 'Well, judge, being on my oath, faith I couldn't say. I delivered a bar'l at Mr. Duffy 's place. On one ind of that bar'l was iuarked "Pat Duffy," on the ither ind was ruarked "whisky, " but bein on me oath I chuldn't say whether Pat Duffy or whisky was in the bar'l.' "The defendant was convicted. "-
