The last legislature made a cbange in the rnethod of canvassing the votes of the counfy after elections, which should effect a considerable saviug iu the expense. Heretofore one cauvasser was selected by each electiou board and each meinber drew 3 per day for the eutire time devoted to the oanvaes, whioh sometiiues occupied a week. , The law passed by the last legislature, and whioh repeals the former law, is in substance as follows: Sectiou 1 provides that at the regular aunual meeting of the board of supervisors for the year 1896, and each secoud year thereafter there shall be elected by ballot three electors, neither of whom shall be a candidato for office at the general elección eusuiug, who, together with the county clerk, who shall not be entitled to a vote on said board, shall eoustitute a board of county cauvassers. And it shall be the duty of the clerk of said board of supervisors to notify said electors of their election within five days thereafter. Said board of supervisors shall, at the time of electiug such board of county canvassers, flx the amount of their compensation, which shall uot exceed s4 per day for each rneruber. The board of suprevisors shall at tbe same time and in the saaie inanner elect an altérnate member of said board, who will be eutitled to serve as a member in the case of a vacancy on said board on acoount of disability, absenoe or other cause. No one will be qualified to act as a member of said board who is a candidate on any ticket, the returns of which are to be canvassed by said board. The county clerk shall be clerk of said bcard. Section 2 provides that each meruber shall take the presoribed oatü of office aud shall hold office for two years or vmtil their snccessors are appoiuted and have qualified. The balance of the new law is practically the same as that heretofore in foroe. The twenty-third annual sessiou of superintendent s of the poor and unión association of Michigan, will be held at Mt. Clemeus, September 15.
