Somebody Is Prevaricating

Offioer Thumm aud Will Gies, of Ypsilanti, had a troublous time be;ween them Saturday uight in which aoth were hardly nsed. Thumm claims that he tried to arrest Gies for swearing and offeriug to lick auy 200 pouud mau in a crowd that was discussing the 16 to 1 gold probleru.1 Wheu he went to do so Gies raised his hand to strike bina, and he knocked hiru down with his club. While kueeliug on Gies trying to get the handcuffs on him some of the crowd kicked Thumm in the jaw and ribs and also stabbed him, whereupon he let his man get up and told him to go home. On the other hand Gies ia out with an affidavit in whioh he claims that Thumm struck him without any provocation whatever, and that tbe offlcer never intimated to him that he wanted to arrest him.
