Braery coums from the land of Naxos in tho eastsrn Mediterr.tBean, wheuce it has besn exported for the last two centuries or more. The beds are iu the aortheast of the island, the deposit descendiug iuto some of the neighboriug islands, the emery beiDg fouud in lenticular ma.sses, resting on layers of schist in limestone, almost identic.il with Parían marble, the finest warble koown, which coows from the island cf Paros close by. There are about 300 men enaged in the trade, all of whorn have to be married before they are admitted to the TTutefm f i"%r iraternity. The material i.s nnicli too hard to be dng out, or eveu blasted. Great lires are lighted round tbe blockstill the uatural cracks expand with the heat and levers are then insertëd te pry them apart. This systera is continned uutil the blocks are redneed iu size to rnnsses of a cubic foot or less, aud they are then shipped as if they were coals.
