James Hodgsou of Peel outlines the Jbistory of woman suffrage in the isle of Man aa follows: Woman suffrage in parliamentary elections in this ieland was granted by the house of keys election, 1881. In the form originally intended, both owners "and occtrpiers were toháve been allowed a vote. As a cotnpromise it was arranged that the vote be restricted to femaïe owners, as an experiment. Experience soon showed that women were quite equal to excrcising the rights oonferred npon theni, and that they used at least as niuuh discretion in voting as niembers of the other sex. This was fully recognized by the house of keys election act, 1893, wheu women occupiers were allowed to vote as well as womeu owners. For 14 years the wonien in the isle of Man have enjoyed the privilege of the parliamentary franchise, and the qaiet manncT i:i which they have exeroised their rights is perhapa the best answer to those who credit women with estreme revel ationary tendeucies.
