At the oonncil meeting Monday evening the rules were suspended and 011 recomrnendation of the board of public works $1,051.3? was allowed to Sharp & Schultz, the Williata st. sewer contractors with which to pay their labor bilis. Against this allowance there was outstanding assigmnents to the amonnt of $401.68. With the balance, nearly $050, Mr. Sharp skipped on Tuesday morning. Mr. Schultz had been oalled away Saturday evening by a telegram announcing that his wife was ill. When the laborers found tba the checks which had been giveu them would not be paid at the bank they quit work and the sewer on whiol there is only abont 150 f eet of straigh ditch to dig and eome house connec tions to make, wa9 at a standstill. On Wednesday Abraham Beek, tbe hondsmau for the contraotors, and Mr Sohultz, the remainiug partner, agreet to go ou and fluish up the contract The men were gnaranteed tbeir back pay and all the pay that would becoru due them by the board uf public works and they went back co work at noon As it now looks. there will be somefhing left after a 1 the claims are paid, al though not ïnnch. Mr. Schultz will b the only loser through the dishoues aotion of his whilom partner.
