Michigan will have the ruost pictureeque governor in the Qnited States. It was a landslide in the east and not mnch of a landslide in the west. The eleotion returns from this oonnty show, if the republican press of bef ore eleotion is to be believed, thatthere are over 5,000 anarohists in the connty. New York changes politics in presidential elections every fonr years. It was her torn to go republican this year and she did it. Four years from now it is the democrats turn in that state. In spite of the fact that Bryan loses this connty, while Cleveland oarried it by a pbenomenal majority four years ago, Bryan has only 161 votes less in the county than Cleveland had in 1892. This election indicates that the people have mastered the intricacies of the Australian ballot. They oan cut and slash it at will. The past campaign has done much in perfecting their knowledge of the ballot, Every large city in the country went for McKinley this year. It was the cities that elected him. The returns so far indícate heavy republican gains in the cities, while the country districts remained about the same as usual, or sbowed slight democratio gains. The country is to be congratnlated, as long as McKinley is elceetd, upon the fact that both branches of congress are republican, and of the same views on finance. This throws the whole bnrden of adininistration npon the repnblican party. It makes it irnpossible for them to shirk respousibility. Ii settles financial agitation for the present at least. It gives the republican party its opportunity to show how prosperons it can tnake this country. Il must bring prosperity or its doom is sealed in 1900. The people who put it in power will bold it to a striot keep ing of its promises.
