Less than three years ago the editor of The Grand Traverse Herald in a strong editorial said: "The fact is the Repüblican party, by principie and tradition, is a friend of silver. The so-called demonetization act of 1873 was passed surreptitiously. and never expressed the views of the party at large. lts full meaning and eff ects were never realized until long af ter. Today, as then, the Repüblican party is a silver party. Both metáis must b'e used. This it has demanded and today demands." Further on ia the editorial the editor severely arraigned President Cleveland for recommending that congress should authorize a $500,000,000 loan papable in fifty years, in gold. He then added the following, which every Repüblican should read and remember when now urged by The Herald and Repüblican speakers to vote for a continuation of the present gold policy endorsed at St. Louis last June: "The demand of the Repüblican party at large and the country is that silver shall be restored to its proper place in the currency of the nation, and the quicker this is done the better. It cannot be done too quickly. It is the duty of the party through its representatives in congress, to indícate to the country as quickly as possible, its position and to act as promptly as circumstances will allow.
