I am seated before a blazing flre iii toe library of a man I sea at a glance is a book loving as well as book owning man. Near rne, by the center t.able, .Tay Oould is seated in a low chair. The shaded lamp throws a flood of light cm a book he holds, and also shows in relief against the background of sharfow his clear ent features. It is the face of a student, aud as he turñs to answer eome questions I have asked about the book I find the happiest expression resting on that face. The dark eyes are brimrning over with that thoughtfuJ look which shows a free mind and a happy moment. Then suddcnly a spasm of pain distorts the face, the eyes close, the book falls frorn a nerveless hand. Por a moment he Reems to suffer the torture of the darnned. Then he pulls himself togsther, begs to be excused, and tlien goes slowly tip the hroad stairway, to pass a night of anguish. His Nemesis has struek home - neuralgia, which lias traveled with him 40 years - an enemy which all his wealth could not bribe had cJaimed its pound of flesh. When I heard of how bc died - turned his face to the white wall, whispered "I am so tired, tired, ;' and then slipped into the uüknown - this sceno came back to me with new meaning. Qould grábbed for gold - got it. And that was all he did get out of life. -
