It bappened not lcrig ago that I had occasiou to request a friend to deliver au urgent letter for toe. The letter contained business of importance which ■was private in its nature, as it coucerned a debt. To hand iny frieud a sealed letter was to presuppose that he would read it if open. To give it to him unsealed was to risk the possibiJity of a third party reading it, for the exigenoies of life are nüiuy, and letters are known to have been dropped. ' I pondered, perplexed, but decided that courtesy was oue of the first laws of society and left the letter open. With an easy bowmy friend receivec the note; then, sceiug the open flap ol the envelope, instantJy gummed it down. That, I said inwardly, is true courtesy.
