A kinsman oí' John C. Calhonn, who has recently visited the oíd homestead in South Carolina, says he found there uearly 3,000' unpublished letters of the South Carolina statesnaan. He quotes one written to Mrs. Clemson, his daughter, March 7, 1848, she being in Belgium at the timo in -whieh Calhoun wrote: "I hold the duties of life to be greater than life itself, and in performing them roanfully and against bope our labor is not lost, but wil) be productive of good in after time. Indeed, I regard this life very much as a struggle against evil and that to hirn who acts on proper principie the reward is in the struggle more than in the victory itself , although that greatly enhances it. So stroug is my faith in this belief, my dear daughter, that no appreciation either by the present or after time is necessary to sustain me in struggling to do my dnty in resisting wrong, especially where my country is concerned, although I put high valué on renown.
