Monday evening's meeting of the comtEon cooncil ouly lasted au hour. All the aldermen were present except Aid. Kooh, Soule and Cady. Considerable business of no great importanoe was got throngh with without much debating. The following synopsis of what was done is taken from the columns of the Evening Times : The petitions for gntteriDg on Main st. between Liberty and Williain sts. and for an electric ligbt at the corner of Jefïerson and First sts. were referred as was a reeommendation of the board of public works, that the covers of the city's flash tanks be recast and altered at ü cost of $407 in order to exclude street dirt and insure safety. The chairman of the finance commit;ee was absent and the finance report, the chief item of which was the elec;ion expenses, had to lie over The street committee reported adversely on establishing a grade on Oxford st. and recoinmended the moving of the catch basin on Detroit st. near Depot st. south to the end of the park. Adopted. City Attorney Kearney submitted an opinión with regard to the proposed opening of Twelfth st. from Hnron st. north. He found that a right of way had been offered the city in 1838 by E. W. and Lucy Morgan, bnt that the offer was never formally accepted by the city. The city possesses therefore no sooh right aDd oan only obtain it by purchase. The opinión waa received and placed ou file. Clerk Mills reported an overdraft of $2,802.81 in the street fund, and $2,244.23 in the bridge, crosswalk and culvert fund. Aid. Coon moved the temporary repair of poor crosswalks by use of einders and plank, and it was so ordered. The clerk was authorized to advertise for bids tor the sale of sewer bonds for Sewer No. 5. Aid. Moore reported that in tris opinión the board of public works is overetepping its authority in making the extensive repaiis at the corner of Main and Packard sts Aid. Dell wanted to know wbo gave that board authority to flx Fuller st. as well. Aid. Maynard wondered how the board of public works conld te "warmed up" for its misdeeds. No one seemed to know and Pres. Hiscock passed to the next order of business. The matter of taxes on two dogs was brought np The clerk said most of onr citizens refused to pay both a lioense and a tax and as a result the ordinance could not be euforced. Aid. Dell thonght that a house to house canvass for dogs should be made and wanted the mayor to appoint an ablebodied polioeman for this purpose. EMually he figured that the janitor of the city building might combine the duties of janitor and "dog canvasser. " Aid. Maynard moved the appointment of a (ominittee of four of whioh the city attorney should be cháirman, to look over the registration and voting of students at the recent election, piek out two or more cases and cairy them to the suprema court for final decisión. Carried, and Aid. Maynard, Coon and Brown with City Attorney Kearney were constituted the committee. Aid. Brown made nis usual motion to adjourn and the counoil did so.
