At the council meeting Monday eveuing, Mayor Walker's message on the peddlers' ordinauoe, the transient traders' ordiuance and the proposal to allow bicyclists certaiu sidewalk privileges, oansed considerable disoussion, as also dul the resolution to iuvestigate the cost of the Detroit st. niaoadamiziug, the complaint abont the running of the Packard at. ears and Aid. Maynard's resolution for the preventiou of boxing contests in the city. The mayor in his message referred to the selling of meat by farmers ou the street, and clairued that it was exempt from the provisious of the transieut traders' ordiuauoe us meat comes under the head of farm prodncts. With refereuce to the use of the sidewalks on certain of the streets in the city by bioyolers, he advooated the use of the sunth side of the streets running east aud west and the east side of the streets running north and south ; that the rate of speed shall be six miles an hour, that they oarry a license tag in plain view. The council disposed of it by placing the portion relating to the bicyclers on file and layiug the balance on tbe table. The report of the board of public works relative to tbe cost of macadamizing Detroit st. was presented, and referred to a committee cousisting of Aids. Koch, Moore, and Rhodes aud the city attoruey for investigation. The report ou the Cullins' sewer claims was received aud placed ou file. The same body objpoted to the passage of the ordiuauee allowing shooting of red squirrels as detiimeutal to Jife and limb. The request of Wm, Stevenson, of Port Hurón, for a settlemeut of bis claims for work on the Liberty st. sewer, aud of Philip Visel for paynient for gravel furnished the city where referred to tbe fiuauce committee. Seven bids were received for the sewer bonds of District No. 5 that of the Farmers aud Mechanica Bank at $35 above par boing the higbest,. Referred. The petition of D. A. Hammond and 32 others asking for the fulfillment of the street railway's franchise on Packard st. was referred to ordinauce committee. The salary of tbe janitor of the city building was fixed at $15 per ïnonth for five months in the year and $10 for each of the others. The ordinanoe relative to the killing of red squirrels was laid on the table. The ordinanoe prohibiting the firing of firearrns within the oity limits was passed. An ordinance regulating lioenses was passed to its second reading. The committee's report relative to employment of Sewer Inspector Groves was adopted, thns oootinuing bis services in that oapacity. City Attorney Kearney gave the opinión that the land desired by'the oity for opening Iwelfth st. is vested in Mr. Whitinau aud Mrs. Poley. The claim of Dr. Lee for the treatment of Jacob Moegle was disallowed. Aid. Maynard moved that the mayor take every step in his power to discontinue further boxing or fighting oontests witbin the city limits. Aid. Brown moved to postpone consideration until the next meeting and it was so ordered. Aid. Soule moved the reference of the bicycle quèstion to a special oommittee and President Hiscook declared the motion out of order.
