Alfred The Great

Aocording to the most reliabie Eaglish historians, Alired the Great, in 872, ■was the first English sovereign to wear a crown. From early insoriptions and historical records it appears that the Saxon kings bef ore the time of Alfred wore simply a band of pearls around tbe head as a mark of roya] power.
