Washington, Feb. 2. - The secretary of war has transmitted to the senate an abstract of the militia forcé of the United States for the year 1896, according to the latest returns received. The grand total of all arms of the service is 1,115,627 and the number of men available for military duty (unorganized), 10,149,184. Larger arms of the service are given as follows: 'Infantry. 1.02,488; cavalry, 4,976: light battery, 4,569.
