John Grifïith, one of tbe most popular young actors of the present day, will come to the Grand opera honse, Monday evening, Maroh 8, in bis elabórate soieoic productiou of "Fanst. " The play has been presented throoghont tbe couutry wirh different actors in the roll of Mephisto, bat this young man has never snft'ered in comparison. In fact the oritioal press and public of all the prominent cities have prouounced bis performance of the difflcnlt oharacter the best of any American actor now precentiug the play. His impersonation oL tbe fiend is very striking, witb many marks of originality in couception and execution. It is a psychologioal study. He is a inau of sensitive and imaginative temperament, aud neither vulgarices tbe "Spirit that nnceasingly denies" by the cbeap expedienta of the buffoon. nor, ou tbe other hand,, bestializes it by playing the role as if Satan were a sort of infernal ogre. The oonception is carefally thought out, and the impersouatiou never desoends to mere materialism. Mr. Qriffith will staee the play with a carload of special soenery, and many new eleotrical and sceuic effects are prornised. A chorus of traiued voioes will be utilized ia tbe cathedral scène.
