J. S. Handy has beeu choseu class orator by the senior laws. The U. of M. will send a relay team fco Chicago to take part in the Coliseum meet in Chicago the middle of next montb. The Sorosis have received plans for their nevv house to be built on Washtenaw ave., across from Prof. Demmon's. F. X. Carmody, '97, bas received an appointment for next year as instructor in elocution and oratory at Notre Dame University. The university bas presented to tbe central high school of Detroit, a latge frame coutaining about 25 piotures of the university buildings. Profs. Freer and Drake have received plans from Chicago, for their houses which they intend to build uext sommer on the Hall additiou. Webster W. Davis, '87 law, formerly iuayor of Kansas City, Mo. , is an applicant for appointment as First Assistant Secretary of the Inferior under President McKinley. Hamilton Reeves, superintendent of buildings and grouuds at tbe university, is in Washington to witness the inaugurtaion. He will be absent from home several weeks. Miss Harriet JMoKiostry is endeavoriug to organize a party of co-eds to make a tour throngh Great Britaiu and on tbe continent the coming summer. The party, if organizad, will leave New ïork in .luly and will return before oollegs opens in the f all. The University of Michigan association of Detroit1 will give its annual bauquet ou the night of March 19. The place bas uot yet been decided npon. Don M. Dickinsou, president of the associatiou, has telegraphod that lie will be present at the aunual meeting, which will precede the banuqet. President Augell will be the gnest of the evening. Miss Von Autenribd is the name of a yonng Germán baroness who is attendiug the mediaal department of the U. of M. Her father was killed in África, and she iuhorited nis estates and title. She determiued to obtain a higher educatiou thau that afforded to women iu Germany, and so carne to the U. of M. Miss Autenried says she is satisfied with America and that she expects to praotiue at Akron, O Prof. .lohu Dewey, of Cfhicago University, formerly of tbe D. of M., delivered the fitst lecture in a course to be given by the Philosophical Society on Saturday eveniug, in Tappan hall, whioh was listened to by a large audieucfi, aiaong whom were inauy mem bsrs of the faculty, old friends of Prof. Dewey. His subject was "The significauce of tbe problem of kaowledge. " At tbe conclusión of the lecture Prof. Wenley made a few remarks and a vote of thauks was tendeied Dr. Dewey. The preliminary oratorioal contest of the senior law dlass was held Satarday uigbt and proved to be the closest one held so far. There were three contestante, T. A. Berkible, C. S. Abbott aud V. M. Cbandler. The markings of the jndges on delivery corresponded exactly. Mr. Berkible receiving the thrtie highest marks.Mr. Chandler three seconds and Mr. Abbott three thirds, and the complete" markings of the judges ou thought and composition and delivery gave the speakers the same mlative positions. Tbe FreshmanrSophomore meet attrauted a large uumber of tudents to the gymnasium on Saturday and proved to be a most interesting cuutest. '99 wou tbe day by a score of 32 to 21 and excitemeut ran high at times for the fresbmen suoceeded in oarrying off two firsts and showed up well in all the eveuts except the pole vault and shot put. Mis3 Sunderland, preseuted the bauuer which the '99 and 1900 girls offered as a prize to the winning team, and .Toyce accepted it for the team, after whieh the individual prizes were distributed.
