St. Louis, March 17. - Fire Monday night gutted the mammoth seven-story granite building at the southwest corner of Eighth street and Washington ave nue, occupied' by the Ely-Wariter Dry Goods company. The loss will be close to $1,500,000. One human Ufe was sacrificed and several people hurt. George Gutewald, a fireman, was caught under a falling wall and killed.
