Frankfort, Ky., March 23.- Tuesday was the first day on which separate ballots could be taken for a United States senator to succeed ex-Senator J. S. Blackburn, under the ruling of Lieut. Gov. Worthington. All morning rumors were rife of the boltlng of six Republlcan members who would not support Congressman God f rey W. Hunter, the nominee, and of the eombination letween a few Republicans and the Democrats to elect Governor Bradley to tr.e senatorship, thus causlng a vacancy in the governor's office and making au opening for the Democrats. Hunter was hard at work using federal patronage on the bolters and at 10 o'cloek announeed that he would . certainly win on the first baliot. This assertion, howèver, proved to be untrue. At 2 o'cloek the tWO houses balloted wfth the followlng resulf. In the senate the vote stood - Blacktmri , Pree Silver Dem., 14; Hunter, Rep., li; Boyle, Rep., 3: Davis, Sound MoiK'y Dem., 6; total, 36. In the house the vote was as followp: Blackburn, 34: Hunter, 53: Boyle, 3; Davis, 5; McCreary, 1; Buckner, 1; Sloane. 1. Necessary for choice, 70. The result shows that Dr. Hunter cannot win in joint session.
