Gov. Pingree's visit to Ann Arbor, Tuesday afternoon, gave rise to considerable speculation as to what its object was. It is now beiieved to have been in connection with the appointnient of a state commissioner of labor. It is the governor's expressed desire to appoint a university faculty niember to the oflïce, and' it is generally conceded that on Tuesday the governor offered the commissionership to H. C. Adams, the political economist of the U. of M., but Prof. Adams refnsed for the reason that he intends to soon ]ave for a year's absence in Europe. Prof. Chas. M. Cooley, son of Judge Thos. M. Cooley, is mentioned as the possible choice of the governor, but no appointment has yet been made. When the subject was mentioned to Mr. Cooley yesterday by the Argus, he said he had had no intirr.ation of any such intention on the part of Governor Pingree, and further stated that he did not think he would accept it if it were oft'ered hiro.
